Goal Setting: How to get what you want

goal setting

Goal setting. Many attempt it but few are able to do it. This post is all about demystifying the process with clear tangible steps that you can take now.

Figuring out how to get what you want in life can either be super exciting or uber terrifying. And the only way you know if you didn’t do it right is if you never end up achieving your goal. But who wants to spend time working towards something and then never getting it? This is why goal setting is completely imperative.

As someone who has set up a ton of goals for themselves, some failed and some succeeded. I’m able to distinguish what kind of goal setting is actually needed to get what you want.

These steps are all you need to get the perfect plan ready for you.

This post is all about goal setting and how to get what you want.

Goal Setting

Goal Setting

Define what you want

I don’t care what anyone says this is one of the hardest questions to answer in life. It may be because we’re constantly bombarded with it. After all, it’s the number one question children are asked – what do you want to be when you grow up? And from that moment you have a responsibility to figure out how you’ll fit into society.

But let’s say you’ve done the necessary work on yourself and you truly know what it is you want. Then perfect. That is the first step in goal setting.

Seriously many people just work towards goals with no understanding of what they want. How many people go to college for the sake of it? And get a degree just to have it? Also, some people get a degree just to better their situation, like me, not necessarily because it’s what they ultimately want.

So create a vision/ mission/ dream statement that fully encompasses what you want. Once you’ve done that hooray! You’re done with step one of goal setting.

Define exactly what that looks like

Okay now that you have this beautifully powerful statement, look at it again and decide what your life would look like.

Sometimes this may make you realize that your goal is nothing more than a pretty idea and not something you’ll actually enjoy. For example, if I said I wanted to help people with their health and for them to feel their best I might think ok I’ll be a doctor. But then I realize it’s after a million years of schooling, I don’t like blood and emotional people give me anxiety. So maybe I can take care of people and their health another way, as a nutritionist or physical trainer.

It’s very easy to fall in love with ideas but you have to ensure it’s not just an idea. For example, I’ve been taking French classes because I love the idea of being trilingual and speaking a beautiful language. But I don’t like what my life actually looks like – being disciplined enough to go over grammar and practice reading and writing daily.

Save yourself time and energy by deciding what you want your life to look like before establishing a goal. Make sure that what you want is something you’ll enjoy working towards.

Break the goal into parts

So I have a goal and I know what I want my life to look like, what’s next?

You figure out how you want to get there by breaking the goal into parts. Maybe your goal is to become great at something, like a sport. Well, make peace with the fact that there’s a beginner and intermediate level before becoming advanced.

Your goal may be to build or create something, well that also takes time and patience. Like a house, a foundation needs to be constructed.

No matter your goal, there is a journey you need to get on to get from where you are to where you want to be. So break that goal down into some manageable parts.

Create a Path

So you have a bunch of puzzle pieces and desires that you need to accomplish in order to make it to your ultimate goal. So let’s place these steps into order.

Don’t stress! This is a matter of laying down the tracks.

We’re looking to create a direction, a guide, a path before getting on the train. There are still a few items to complete before starting but for now, that blueprint is what you need to focus on first.

What resources or skills do you need to get there?

Yes, there is a process and steps you need to take to create a goal setting plan. But before taking one step you want to make sure you’re well equipped to head into battle. So you have a destination and a plan to get there, now you have to look at what resources you need to get there in the first place.

Are there classes you need to take? People you need to meet or network with? Maybe you don’t even know what resources you need.

Give yourself the time to first decide what resources you need and then discover where they exist.

Update your personal calendar

Now you have a goal, a direction, and the resources you need to get there. Let’s take all that information now and make it active. Get out your calendar and create a schedule.

You may think to yourself – hey I don’t need a calculated schedule, a to-do list will work fine enough. That’s where you’re wrong.

Having a schedule that details what you’re doing at different times of the day is the only way to hold yourself accountable and measure how much time something actually takes you to do. Without this, your time will quietly be taken away from you.

I mean how many times have you said oh I’m just going to check my email or Instagram real quick and then an hour later realize you haven’t been able to put the phone down? It happens all the time and we give ourselves permission to do this when we’re not intentional with our time.

Also if this is something you don’t do, believe me, it is an easy habit to adapt. Once you’ve done it a few days in a row and see how productive you’ve been, then you’ll become obsessed with scheduling your time.

Motivation

We all go through it. A moment where you start to lose the desire for the things you want because the result is nowhere near.

I beg of you, find the time to identify for yourself what motivates you. After you found that, find someone who inspires you, preferably someone with a social media presence, so that you can leverage their content to encourage you to move forward.

I’ll be frank, I lose the desire to write this blog all the time, but between my brother pushing me and a few bloggers I follow on YouTube, I always find my way back to it.

And if you lose motivation it does not mean you don’t want to do it. It means whatever you’re doing is hard and the harder the work, the sweeter the result.

Enjoy the process

Besides motivation, another thing you want to keep in mind as you work on your goal and follow your blueprint is to find ways to enjoy the process.

It’s important to have a good work ethic and it’s ok if the work is hard but you also need to be aware of what moments you enjoy. And when you face those moments then you need to completely relish them.

Also when you reach little milestones take the moment to celebrate them and congratulate yourself. Don’t be so tough on yourself and believe that the finish line is all that matters.

As the old adage says – it’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey. We spend 99% of our time working on a goal and the last 1% is when you finally really that goal. Don’t allow 99% of your time to be completely gruesome.

Also, I would like to think that whatever your goal is, it’s actually something that you want and that you have agreed this is what you want your life to look like as you’ve previously decided. So it shouldn’t be too hard to enjoy.

Become Obsessed

Ok so we’re motivated and we’re enjoying the process, now give yourself permission to become obsessed with your goal. This is the only way to give it all that you got.

And when you give something everything you have, then you’ll have no regrets and get what you want sooner. Believe me, if you try to be lax about it, you’re only doubling the amount of time and energy it will take to see the results. You’ll lose heart and you’ll quit.

Don’t let this happen to you. Become a genius at what you’re trying to accomplish. It’ll make the ride a whole lot more fun.

This post was all about how to get what you want through the art form of goal setting.

As someone who felt lost and trapped, and had no idea what kind of hill they needed to climb in order to live an epic tale. I found that taking these steps allowed me to find my feet and overcome my obstacles.

It’s not as complicated or as mysterious as you think and it all starts with looking at your goals your definition and your business in a new light. Once you’re able to create a relationship and have an understanding of these three terms you’ll be able to make it through the battlefield of life.

This post is all about the ultimate trilogy that makes up your personal origin story: Goals Definition Business.

Definition

Our life is all about meaning. If something doesn’t mean anything to you, then it has no purpose. So your purpose or what you should do with your life is found in meaning because that’s what gives you a purpose or goal.  This is by far one of the simplest and most complex ideas of all time.

To break it down even more think of this question. Where does meaning exist for you?

Is there something that matters to you? Pay attention to it and let it guide you when you’re making decisions in your life. Doing this will allow you to define how you want to live. Let’s say you’re having trouble figuring out what’s important to you.

Ask yourself these questions to get on the right track:

  • What do you want your life to look like?
  • What looks like the perfect job?
  • What jobs, tasks, or hobbies will lead you to that ideal job?

Now I know sometimes we may not be able to specifically label or define what we want and that’s ok. It’s a process. Sometimes you don’t even know what your options are or where to look. If you find yourself in that scenario then ask yourself these questions:

  • How do you want to feel?
  • What do you currently do that makes you feel that way?
  • Can you do more of it? And if you can’t,  figure out what you need to change in your life so that isn’t so.

If you find yourself unable to answer these questions. Then it may be that there’s something blocking you from finding your meaning. Usually, if nothing matters to us it’s because something has imprisoned us and won’t allow us to feel anything else. In other words, you’re sad and you can’t stop feeling sad. So see if the questions below can assist you in finding the culprit.

  • What do you do most during a typical day?
  • Is someone else prouder than you are of yourself?
  • Do you feel guilty when you smile?

Answering these questions will guide you down the rabbit hole of your life. You either know what you want or you don’t. And if you don’t know what you want it’s because you’re spending your time and energy helping someone else with what they want.

That’s the first step in any amazing story. Finding where paradise is and making your way there or discovering who the villain is and then defeating them.

We all need to spend time with ourselves so we can figure out what different things mean to us and why. It may seem scary or unnecessary but everything begins with meaning. So figure out your ultimate definition of life and use these questions to get you started.

Goals

After answering those questions you now know what you want. So make them into actual goals. A wish is an unspoken desire but a wish that is connected to a goal can become a plan of action. And a plan is the only way things get done on purpose. It’s the only way you’re able to choose your future.

There are a ton of different types of goals. The most organized and achievable way of looking at them is as follows:

  • Set up mini goals that will lead to your ultimate dream. Don’t have one massive goal that you have no idea how to take on.
  • Create benchmarks of progress for yourself. No one just loses 100 pounds. First, they lose 5 then 10, and then so on. Allow yourself to celebrate every milestone, no matter how small it may seem. Progress is progress.
  • Decide when and where this will take you. Every small goal achieved leads to another one. Have an idea of this overall path so you’re able to see how much you’ve done and how much is left for you to conquer.

I’ve always been a big dreamer but like Pixar’s movie Soul you realize the activity, no matter where you are, is always the same. It’s about getting more aligned or becoming better at doing something that matters to you. These goals will only allow you to become better and greater at what matters to you.

Also, make sure to enjoy this process. In the past, my goals were aimed so high that I didn’t even try to pursue them. Also if you forget the joy you have for the task you’ll soon see your goals as chores that only lead to a broken heart. Make sure your goals are right for you by answering the questions below:

  • Do your goals scare you or excite you? They should excite you, not terrify you into paralysis.
  • Where did your goal come from? You don’t want to chase industry standards. You want to chase the experiences you’d like to live.
  • Can you complete it by the end of the year? Plan smaller if this is not the case. Remember micro goals lead to big accomplishments.

At the end of the day, your goal should make your heart sing and bring a level of peace into your life. That is real joy and meaning. Eventually, you’ll come to a point where you’ll see that the only real obstacle is yourself and your mind. Everything is achievable and once you reach your first goal you’ll want to do it again and again.

Remember superman didn’t just beat one bad guy. He saved people and himself again and again.

Business

We live in a world driven by business. Globalization has allowed us all to connect and profit from each other’s work. Now I am not talking about exploration. Unfortunately, that has also occurred. But I’d like to focus on the fact that because of globalization we have more food options, more services, and more opportunities to live the life we’ve chosen to live.

So your definition of life has led you to your goals and now your goals will lead you to what kind of business you’d like to get into. More specifically:

  • What do you have to do daily to live the life you want?
  • What do you have to do daily to live the life you’d like to live later?

Once you answer those questions figure out how this can serve others and then you’ll know what business you’re in. We do not live in a vacuum. We all live on the same planet together and once you’ve figured out what role your puzzle piece you’d like to play, then you’ll be able to help yourself and others. Nothing in life is a sacrifice if there’s a point to it.  Your sacrifices are a part of the story of your life.

7 Inspiring Development Goals that will lead to a better world

development goals

Do you ever wish for world peace or something close to it? Learn about the 7 development goals that will lead to a better world.

Working on one’s self is quite the journey and as you become more aware of yourself and your surroundings, it inevitability spills over to you wanting to impact the world in a positive way.

As someone who went back to college just to get a better job and came out a changed person. One whose life ultimately changed for the better. I found that these 7 development goals helped me feel better connected and empathetic to the world around me.

In this post you are going to learn all about how working on yourself can translate to making a better world. Read this post on the 7 development goals you can achieve to become a global citizen who learns and grows with the world around you.

This post is all about the 7 inspiring developments goals you need to take on to create a better world.

Development Goals

7 Development Goals

1. Communication Development Goals

Let’s face it, the world would be a better place if we had better communication skills. Learning how to communicate leads to empathy, compromise, and working together towards a greater good.

Communication development goals could come in the form of learning a language, improving your writing skills, and leveraging interpersonal communication skills.

Learning a language allows you to connect with a different culture, helps you develop a greater understanding of how others interpret life and could lead to new opportunities.

Writing skills can be severely underrated. We live in a very digital world and with that, we’re being called to engage with larger populations in limited scopes of time. AKA email and tweets are here to stay and grow. Having full awareness of the perception you make, could ultimately dictate the direction a relationship takes.

Interpersonal communication skills occur during the immediate transaction of connecting with another person. This includes talking, listening, and nonverbal communication. It could also include writing. This may feel very abstract but it doesn’t need to be. Work on this skill by taking an improvisation class.

Improv classes force you to listen and react only to what is given to you. You know when you’re having a conversation and the other person is clearly not listening to you and the next thing they say is what they were planning in their head…that’s the kind of thing we need to avoid for a better world.

2. Spiritual Development Goals

Before we can be amazing global citizens who bring people together, solve problems, and better the world, we first need to take care of ourselves.

Spirituality can come in the form of having a religion, a spiritual practice, or self-care rituals.

There’s no way we can bring peace to others if we’re unable to bring peace to ourselves. Your outside world is a reflection of what’s happening on the inside. In simpler terms and how this connects to development goals, is if you see the good in others then others will then see the good in others as well. It’s a ripple effect.

Take the time to discover what you need to enjoy your life and practice it. The joy and peace you’ll obtain will be contagious and help others.

3. Body

Don’t underestimate how amazing your body is. Our bodies allow us to see the world around us, smell things that can lead to the loveliest of memories, walk this earth, and dream. And all of this is for the cost of nothing.

Give thanks to your body by keeping the engine running.

When you take the time to stretch, exercise, or find a physical activity that you can do on a regular basis you’re honoring your body by using it. What you don’t use, is lost.

Also when you physically feel fit you’re energized and that influences your experience of the world and how others experience the world around you.

Take care of your engine and you’ll be better able to help someone else jumpstart theirs.

4. Nutrition

There was a time when we ate purely to stay alive. It wasn’t this luxurious extravaganza where we had the availability to pick and choose what we put into our bodies.

Eating is more than just an experience or for enjoyment. Food is the fuel you need to get through the day and your life.

It is important to be aware of the vitamins and minerals you need to live. Your level of energy, strength, and endurance depends on it. Without a healthy understanding of nutrition, you may be harming yourself and those around you.

5. Knowledge

What does knowledge lead to? Well, it leads to awareness, and awareness is what you need if you want to make the world a better place. Ignorance is not bliss, it is the masked puppeteer that allows evil to take place.

Knowledge may seem like an overwhelming topic to grasp, but it can easily be broken down. Just take a moment to think – where does knowledge come from?

Everyone harps on the importance of reading and with good reason. Reading newspapers, reading research papers, or just reading the signs around you allows you to connect with an idea or a person without them necessarily being there.

Watching the news, debates, documentaries or speakers is also an easy way to gain a breadth of knowledge. Please be aware that not all things are created equal and so make sure that what you’re watching has a level of credibility.

Lastly, knowledge comes from studying and practicing the things around you. Is there someone around you, you can watch while they work? You can also be self-sufficient and take it upon yourself to practice a new skill with a youtube video as your teacher.

6. Impact

The daily impact you now make can help you prepare as you figure out the development goals for leaders you may need to take on later in the future. Where can you make the most impact?

You don’t need to wait till tomorrow to be great, start practicing today by asking yourself these questions at work:

  • Am I adding value to my team?
  • Do I assist my colleagues when they ask for assistance?
  • Is my manager’s life easier or harder because of me?
  • Am I giving it everything I’ve got?
  • Would I want a loved one to work here and if not what can I do to make it a better place?

If you’re trying to create a level of positive impact while participating in an activity or hobby of choice, ask yourself these questions:

  • Do people like to engage with me or do I like to engage with others? Why or why not?
  • What is this activity missing that could make it better?
  • How can I better support those around me?
  • What do I need to enjoy this?
  • How often am I smiling? What would make myself and those around me smile more?

7. Help Related Development Goals

Now the most obvious way to help make the world a better place is to start selflessly giving. But when thinking of development goals always remember you can’t help others until you can help yourself. And that is not selfish, it’s necessary if you want your actions to account for the long haul.

There is no greater commodity in this world than time. If you volunteer and give your time to a foundation you are truly a saint. Nothing creates a greater impact than showing up and letting someone know you care.

Of course, many of us don’t have the availability to make such a beautiful commitment but donating can be just as helpful.

Donate if you can to any cause you care about. It assists others in their fight to make the world a better place. Also please be very aware of who you’re donating to. Unfortunately, there are a lot of scammers in this arena.

Another way you can help is by being aware of the purchases you make. Look up the company values. Do they pay their employees living wages? Are they sustainably sourcing their materials? Do they donate a percentage of their profits? Is a living creature being hurt in the making of this product?

These are all very important questions that can lead to a better world because ultimately you vote when you make a purchase. We live in a world of supply and demand. And if you purchase or demand a product that has values you agree with, then more of that kind of product will be made.

Hey, it’s one of the reasons why vegan makeup is so popular now and I’m fine with that if it means fewer animals are being harmed in the making of these products.

After everything is said and done always look to and join the good that you see in the world.
