What is Professional Development?

what is professional development

What is professional development? Why does this question even matter? Well, in this post you’ll find the answer and how you can connect with this topic.

Being an adult is hard but the greatest challenge is figuring out what you’re trying to do and how best to do it. As someone who lives by the quote, “be the change you want to see in the world” I’m constantly looking for ways to improve myself. Looking at how everything connects and trying to figure out what’s missing.

This is where professional development really saves the day. We think about dreams and goals but focusing on the actions you take is what will get you there. Believe me, having a path to follow is half the battle.  But after that, it’s a professional development journey.

This post is all about what professional development is, how working on it will lead to your goals, why it matters and what next steps you can take on your journey.

What is professional Development

What is professional development?

Learning

Ok, this may seem like the most obvious answer but sometimes the most obvious answers are the most underrated. Professional Development is learning. However many times, especially after we finish our schooling, we forget what learning looks like. For example, I’m taking French classes right now and it is not easy. There are so many rules and things that I’m trying to figure out.

When we get older we confuse training with learning and they are both very different. Training is information that tells you how to complete a task by following directions. Learning is figuring out how to do something with the information you have collected. It’s like a set of guard rails that only tell you what the ride is going to be like. Once you’re done training, your responses and actions are automated, you don’t need to think twice about it. When you’re learning you are forever figuring out new ways to do something.

In this context professional development is constantly learning for the sole purpose of keeping your mind adaptable and elastic to the constant changes and needs that may exist in your workplace or life. When you continue learning, you continue developing and you’re able to create better opportunities for yourself within your profession.

So what does learning look like? You could argue that it is constantly exposing yourself to new things and trying to absorb the information in a manner that you can then implement this knowledge productively and efficiently. But that also sounds a bit like training. Then again it may not, it really depends on your personal experience.

Here are a few ways that you can learn without question:

  • Classes

A class is when you follow a plan in hopes of becoming knowledgeable about a specific topic. There are usually other students there and you can also learn from them while you’re on your journey. Taking a class is by far my favorite way to learn.

Now let’s say you have a specific problem and you know you can figure out the solution yourself. Well, that’s not learning that’s creating and there’s no problem there unless an amazing solution already exists.

Then I’d like to introduce you to this awesome quote, “Don’t reinvent the wheel”. There are people, and teachers, who have organized information in a way that allows you to better understand and implement specific information, and knowledge, to a problem.

Take a class and save your time if that’s the case. Learning is hard enough, there’s no need to learn how you should learn. Also disclaimer taking a class and memorizing information is not learning, so make sure to participate and engage with the material.

  • Read

Do you want to better understand and obtain information that is not necessarily connected to a tangible problem you’re currently facing? Then reading is your best bet. For example, if you’re interested in learning how Stone Hedge was constructed because you’re an architect and it can help you think outside the box in your everyday life then reading is best.

You’ll be exposed to theories on how one of the great wonders of the world was created without ever having to play around with a bunch of stones.

  • Watch

Luckily we also have the tv and movies if you’re someone who has an easier time grasping ideas and ways of thinking, visually. I adore documentaries about the environment because I’m a vegan and this allows me to walk into different conversations.

Learning via documentaries allows you to build an understanding of a topic and then you’re able to share that information with others and use it to inform the decisions you make in your life.

Building

Now you have a wealth of knowledge. Congratulations!

But what good is knowing a bunch of cool things and then doing nothing with it? It’s almost like baking a cake and then not eating it or serving it to others. All that work was then a complete waste. It’s a waste because it doesn’t lead to something else and stops the momentum of development.

So what do you do next? You do something with all that information. And there’s only one thing to do – build. Building something may seem overwhelming but once you realize it’s a process then the hardest part is really just showing up for yourself.

Here are the three steps in the building process:

  • Beginning

The beginning of a process is always the most challenging because it really includes the following two steps which are the middle and end. At the beginning of any journey, you need to define what you want and why you want it. A simple example is maybe I want to go to the grocery store because I need food to live.

Great! So next you need to define how do you get there and which way you plan to get there. Again going back to this example, I have my car and there’s plenty of gas in it so that’s how I’ll get there. Also, I pulled up directions so I know exactly where I’m going.

Nice! But do you know specifically what you want? No, so you make a grocery list and make sure you have the cash to pay for these products.

Perfect that is the beginning of anything you build. It’s literally prepping for the journey you’re about to take.

  • Middle

The middle is actually completing what you set out to do. Also, the middle is where you have to be alert and ready for any changes that you need to make.

For example, I forgot that my brother borrowed my car. So you ask yourself do you want to walk to the grocery store, do you want to go later and adjust the timing of your plan or do you want to catch a ride with someone. It doesn’t matter how many plans you’ve prepared there’s always a chance something unpredicted will pop up.

The middle is your moment to go through the steps you’ve prepared and see what happens.

  • End

This is the most important part of your building process, so don’t forget it. Take the time to reflect on what just occurred, define what you just learned (so it can be applied next time), and start building towards your next beginning.

Let’s say you ended up walking to the grocery store, didn’t bring enough money and when you got back home you realized you forgot the keys to your house. This was not a bad day. It was a day where you learned the different items that need to be considered next time you’re going to the grocery store.

It’s only with this step that we become better and begin to excel at what we’re trying to accomplish. Because after all, what is not measured is not managed and that’s where development stops taking place.

Connecting

Cool so we learned something and then we built it. Have you achieved professional development? Nope.

This world is made of many human beings and we all impact each other. No one is an island and no one can create anything entirely by themselves.

Maybe you’re thinking – painting and cooking can be done in solitude.. and my response is, no it can’t. No cook is able to grow all their crops and construct all their cooking equipment. Those are completely separate expertises, you may dabble in it but you can’t fully commit to it if you consider yourself a cook. The same goes for a painter and their supplies.

Depending on your activity, your subject, or where you decided your professional development lives, you’ll find connection points with other people. And the better you’re able to connect with them, the better the experience for everyone involved and the better the final good or service you’re creating is.

Here are a few simple ways you can connect with others:

  • Listen

I was very intentional with not using talking. To be honest, most people don’t know how to talk, they debate. Debating consists of two people trying to get their ideas across. Talking is when one person speaks and then the other person responds and then they keep responding to each other.

So if you want to connect with another human being, listen to what they have to say and then respond.

  • Network

Networking is not trying to get things from other people. Networking is learning about what one person is going through, in their professional or personal life, and sharing what you’re going through. This may lead to you finding similar interests or discovering a way of helping each other.

So go out there and help someone who needs it.

  • Update

After you start listening to people and networking, stay up to date with their lives. Don’t lose the connection. It took work to build this connection and it will take work to maintain. However, without it, you won’t be able to excel or fully develop.

self Development Courses

Are you ready to change your life for the better? Have you been looking for a self development course that you can start today? With self development being so popular, it’s tough to figure out what could help you become a better you. Well here are three FREE courses you can start today.

When you’re ready to jump into a course, especially a self development one, the last thing you want are any obstacles. Also, it’s nice when they’re totally free!

As someone who is obsessed with reaching their highest potential and has many times found themselves to be in a total funk, I really credit these courses for lifting me up.

Also, with repetition, these courses have entirely altered my perception of life. Like seriously I’ve never cared so much about bringing value to this world and pushing my limits. To some, this might seem like a bit much but as they say in Spiderman, “With great power comes great responsibility” and I hope you are here for it too.

This post is all about 3 (Out of this World) Self Development courses that you can do today for free.

3 Free Self Development Courses

1) The Strangest Secret by Earl Nightingale

Once upon a time, I was scrolling through youtube and I saw this title, “The Strangest Secret” and as a conspiracy enthusiast, I knew this would be right up my alley. Little did I know that this audio clip would change my life forever.

Earl Nightingale is this man from a long time ago, who was one of the first, “self-help gurus” to ever exist. I didn’t know this at the time, but I was taught from a young age to always listen to and respect my elders, so I gave Earl my heart at the moment that I clicked play.

Later I find out that this audio clip is one of the top self development courses of all time. And now I’ll tell you why.

Actually, before I go there, you must be thinking that an audio clip is not a course. Well, a course is something that you need to consistently pursue, over time, to reach a goal. And Earl says listen to him for 30 days (yes the same audio clip) and then you complete the course. That is if you don’t break his rule.

And his rule is – if you have a negative thought then you have to start again. BOOM! Now isn’t that the most difficult thing in the world? He’s #Brilliant

So here’s a play-by-play of what my dearest love Earl says in this recording:

  • Success equals having a goal and working towards it
  • Settling is the worst thing in the world
  • There’s no competition just focus on creating
  • We become what we think about
  • Anything that’s really worthwhile in life is free (e.g., hopes, dreams, love, and family)
  • Look for the circumstances you want and if you can’t find them, make them
  • Force yourself to think positively
  • Save at least 10% of every dollar you earn
  • Ideas are worthless unless you act on them
  • Your returns in life are in direct proportion to what you give

Here’s the recording. There are a few available versions on YouTube but I dig the scratchy vintage sounding one:

2) The Science of Well-Being brought to you by Yale

When the pandemic first hit, I was pretty down like most people. And Yale came out with this course that went totally viral. Now when I say viral I mean everyone I knew was talking about it and that’s my way of measuring what’s viral.

So Yale comes out with this course and I had a ton of free time, so I enrolled and went through the whole course. And this course was not what I expected at all.

Now when I hear there’s a happiness course I think – Yippee now I’ll have a few things I can do and then I’ll feel fabulous… Nope.

This course had videos and assignments to complete. Laurie, the teacher, presents different ideas that we have about happiness and pulls them apart in a way that knocks your visions of happiness off a pedestal.

It’s like learning that the tooth fairy isn’t real and that you don’t have to pull your teeth out for some change. Sure you lose a little bit of the magic but you’re no longer waiting for something outside of yourself to bring you joy. So it’s empowering in an adult way.

Spoiler alert – Here are some of the revealing facts you learn during this course:

  • An increase in salary only makes you happy up to $75,000 a year and then it levels off
  • Knowing something is not enough to change your behavior
  • Gratitude is the bomb
  • We predict we’ll be more upset about not getting something (e.g., a job) than we actually experience
  • Purchases only make us happy for a moment and then we get jaded and tired of it
  • Nonmaterialist people are happier
  • Your level of happiness is 50% genetics, 40% your thoughts, and 10% life happens

Here’s the playlist on YouTube. If you have the time I suggest you try it out:

3) The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron

Now, this last course is a book. There are a few recordings of it on YouTube but I suggest you go to a library and borrow the book. It’s a super cool and vintage thing to do.

So this book was technically made for people who are trying to get over writer’s block. But I’d like to argue that it could help with any form of blockage you may be experiencing.

Unlike the other two self development courses, this book asks you to do very specific things in order to get your spark back and get you moving.

These activities include:

  • Morning Pages – Every morning you need to dedicate time to writing
  • Artist Dates – You need to take yourself out on a date
  • New – You have to try new things
  • Ask – You have to ask and answer super deep questions about yourself and your desires

This book was the first time I ever tried a self development course and what I liked about that experience is how it encourages you to start developing a very intimate relationship with yourself. You have to look in a mirror and figure out why you feel like a failure, what is the one thing you love in your life, and you’re left having to decide where you want to go next. It’s definitely not for the faint of heart but for those that are hungry to feel alive.

Funny enough a long time ago, when I first finished this book I recorded a reaction/review video on YouTube. I’m only publishing it now in hopes that my messy specifics may help someone else figure out their journey. Or at least feel a bit more confident in taking their next step.  Or decide whether or not this is the self development course for you. Also apologies for the quality. This video is at least 7 years old and was recorded on some rebel camera 🙂

This post was all about the best FREE Self Development Courses ever…like in the world.

7 Inspiring Development Goals that will lead to a better world

development goals

Do you ever wish for world peace or something close to it? Learn about the 7 development goals that will lead to a better world.

Working on one’s self is quite the journey and as you become more aware of yourself and your surroundings, it inevitability spills over to you wanting to impact the world in a positive way.

As someone who went back to college just to get a better job and came out a changed person. One whose life ultimately changed for the better. I found that these 7 development goals helped me feel better connected and empathetic to the world around me.

In this post you are going to learn all about how working on yourself can translate to making a better world. Read this post on the 7 development goals you can achieve to become a global citizen who learns and grows with the world around you.

This post is all about the 7 inspiring developments goals you need to take on to create a better world.

Development Goals

7 Development Goals

1. Communication Development Goals

Let’s face it, the world would be a better place if we had better communication skills. Learning how to communicate leads to empathy, compromise, and working together towards a greater good.

Communication development goals could come in the form of learning a language, improving your writing skills, and leveraging interpersonal communication skills.

Learning a language allows you to connect with a different culture, helps you develop a greater understanding of how others interpret life and could lead to new opportunities.

Writing skills can be severely underrated. We live in a very digital world and with that, we’re being called to engage with larger populations in limited scopes of time. AKA email and tweets are here to stay and grow. Having full awareness of the perception you make, could ultimately dictate the direction a relationship takes.

Interpersonal communication skills occur during the immediate transaction of connecting with another person. This includes talking, listening, and nonverbal communication. It could also include writing. This may feel very abstract but it doesn’t need to be. Work on this skill by taking an improvisation class.

Improv classes force you to listen and react only to what is given to you. You know when you’re having a conversation and the other person is clearly not listening to you and the next thing they say is what they were planning in their head…that’s the kind of thing we need to avoid for a better world.

2. Spiritual Development Goals

Before we can be amazing global citizens who bring people together, solve problems, and better the world, we first need to take care of ourselves.

Spirituality can come in the form of having a religion, a spiritual practice, or self-care rituals.

There’s no way we can bring peace to others if we’re unable to bring peace to ourselves. Your outside world is a reflection of what’s happening on the inside. In simpler terms and how this connects to development goals, is if you see the good in others then others will then see the good in others as well. It’s a ripple effect.

Take the time to discover what you need to enjoy your life and practice it. The joy and peace you’ll obtain will be contagious and help others.

3. Body

Don’t underestimate how amazing your body is. Our bodies allow us to see the world around us, smell things that can lead to the loveliest of memories, walk this earth, and dream. And all of this is for the cost of nothing.

Give thanks to your body by keeping the engine running.

When you take the time to stretch, exercise, or find a physical activity that you can do on a regular basis you’re honoring your body by using it. What you don’t use, is lost.

Also when you physically feel fit you’re energized and that influences your experience of the world and how others experience the world around you.

Take care of your engine and you’ll be better able to help someone else jumpstart theirs.

4. Nutrition

There was a time when we ate purely to stay alive. It wasn’t this luxurious extravaganza where we had the availability to pick and choose what we put into our bodies.

Eating is more than just an experience or for enjoyment. Food is the fuel you need to get through the day and your life.

It is important to be aware of the vitamins and minerals you need to live. Your level of energy, strength, and endurance depends on it. Without a healthy understanding of nutrition, you may be harming yourself and those around you.

5. Knowledge

What does knowledge lead to? Well, it leads to awareness, and awareness is what you need if you want to make the world a better place. Ignorance is not bliss, it is the masked puppeteer that allows evil to take place.

Knowledge may seem like an overwhelming topic to grasp, but it can easily be broken down. Just take a moment to think – where does knowledge come from?

Everyone harps on the importance of reading and with good reason. Reading newspapers, reading research papers, or just reading the signs around you allows you to connect with an idea or a person without them necessarily being there.

Watching the news, debates, documentaries or speakers is also an easy way to gain a breadth of knowledge. Please be aware that not all things are created equal and so make sure that what you’re watching has a level of credibility.

Lastly, knowledge comes from studying and practicing the things around you. Is there someone around you, you can watch while they work? You can also be self-sufficient and take it upon yourself to practice a new skill with a youtube video as your teacher.

6. Impact

The daily impact you now make can help you prepare as you figure out the development goals for leaders you may need to take on later in the future. Where can you make the most impact?

You don’t need to wait till tomorrow to be great, start practicing today by asking yourself these questions at work:

  • Am I adding value to my team?
  • Do I assist my colleagues when they ask for assistance?
  • Is my manager’s life easier or harder because of me?
  • Am I giving it everything I’ve got?
  • Would I want a loved one to work here and if not what can I do to make it a better place?

If you’re trying to create a level of positive impact while participating in an activity or hobby of choice, ask yourself these questions:

  • Do people like to engage with me or do I like to engage with others? Why or why not?
  • What is this activity missing that could make it better?
  • How can I better support those around me?
  • What do I need to enjoy this?
  • How often am I smiling? What would make myself and those around me smile more?

7. Help Related Development Goals

Now the most obvious way to help make the world a better place is to start selflessly giving. But when thinking of development goals always remember you can’t help others until you can help yourself. And that is not selfish, it’s necessary if you want your actions to account for the long haul.

There is no greater commodity in this world than time. If you volunteer and give your time to a foundation you are truly a saint. Nothing creates a greater impact than showing up and letting someone know you care.

Of course, many of us don’t have the availability to make such a beautiful commitment but donating can be just as helpful.

Donate if you can to any cause you care about. It assists others in their fight to make the world a better place. Also please be very aware of who you’re donating to. Unfortunately, there are a lot of scammers in this arena.

Another way you can help is by being aware of the purchases you make. Look up the company values. Do they pay their employees living wages? Are they sustainably sourcing their materials? Do they donate a percentage of their profits? Is a living creature being hurt in the making of this product?

These are all very important questions that can lead to a better world because ultimately you vote when you make a purchase. We live in a world of supply and demand. And if you purchase or demand a product that has values you agree with, then more of that kind of product will be made.

Hey, it’s one of the reasons why vegan makeup is so popular now and I’m fine with that if it means fewer animals are being harmed in the making of these products.

After everything is said and done always look to and join the good that you see in the world.
